DivX support coming to all Android devices with a Qualcomm Snapdragon
So this is a bit of news that’s worth writing about here on Android Underground.
Various news sites have been reporting that the HTC Desire will be getting support for 720p DivX play and record capabilities. I am prepared to go even further and I predict all Android devices with a Qualcomm Snapdragon (or later & faster) will be able to do this, courtesy of Nextreaming.
Why do I make such a prediction ? Well, I did some research and last November, Nextreaming announced DivX support on their Nexplayer for the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform.
From the press release here’s the quote from Dr. Il-Taek Lim, CEO of Nextreaming:
“We are pleased to announce DivX™ support at NexPlayer™ optimized for Qualcomm Snapdragon™. Our media player is being used by the most important mobile device manufacturers worldwide; we are committed to providing them with the latest technology. With this announcement, we enforce our competitiveness in a popular platform such as Qualcomm Snapdragon™ and we help our customers to prepare attractive devices according to the strong trend of Mobile and Internet convergence. Moreover, the use of internal hardware accelerators in the Qualcomm chipset can make NexPlayer™ more optimized. We will keep updating NexPlayer™ with this aim continuously” he added.
Of course there was no specific mention of Android at that time but now if you go to the Nexplayer™ Product Page, all the way at the bottom you can see that Android support is mentioned.
What is Nexplayer™ ?
NexPlayer™ is the mobile multimedia player which can play audio/video contents stored at the local memory or delivered from the server. It is fully compliant with international standards such as 3GPP and 3GPP2, and also supports proprietary specifications for some operators such as Orange, Vodafone, SKT, KTF, LGT, etc. In addition, the streaming function is available to support multi-cast – DVB-H of the European mobile TV standards, CMMB of the Chinese mobile TV standards and MBMS of the 3GPP standards – as well as 3GPP based uni-cast streaming. This media player having abundant features is already proved in the market through commercial references and being evolved. NexPlayer™ will be the best choice for the customers who want to enable mobile phones with an excellent player for worldwide network operators.
